WakeMed and UNC School of Medicine Teaching Renew Agreement
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 7, 2016) – For more than 45 years, WakeMed Health & Hospitals and the UNC School of Medicine have worked together to teach medical students and residents. This longstanding collaboration continues as WakeMed and the UNC School of Medicine have entered into a new 10-year agreement to provide education and training to the next generation of physicians.
On July 1, 1971, WakeMed (then known as Memorial Hospital of Wake County) welcomed its first internal medicine resident from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Today, WakeMed is the primary community hospital participating site for UNC residency training and serves as one of the largest medical student teaching sites for UNC’s School of Medicine.
“We are proud of our 45-year history with UNC, bringing together our strengths and resources for the greater good of the community,” said Donald Gintzig, WakeMed president & CEO. “We have already witnessed the value of our ongoing partnership in medical education, and we’ll continue to explore collaborative efforts that enhance patient care delivery, the health of our communities and the next generation of physicians.”
WakeMed hosts more than 300 UNC medical residents in eight different specialties each year. In addition, more than 200 months of UNC medical student rotations are completed annually at WakeMed.
