NHRMC Emergency Department Dedicates New Space Upon Completion of Two Year Renovation and Expansion

WILMINGTON, N.C. April 18, 2017 – New Hanover Regional Medical Center marked the completion of a two-year renovation to its main campus Emergency Department today at a dedication ceremony for staff and employees.

“Our expansion and renovation offers patients more privacy, comfort and efficiency than ever before,” said Christy Spivey, NHRMC administrator of emergency services. “In our mission of leading our community to outstanding health, this expansion demonstrates our commitment to providing the excellent emergency care the people of our region deserve.”

At the dedication, Spivey thanked outgoing medical director Dr. Bryan Durham for his many years of service and leadership in the department, and welcomed Dr. De B. Winter III as the incoming medical director.

In May 2015, NHRMC began the expansion and renovation of its main campus emergency department, the busiest emergency department in southeastern North Carolina, to serve the community’s growing needs. The project doubled the department’s size and gives providers the capacity to care for more than 104,000 patients a year.

The expanded emergency department now offers 106 patient spaces, to comfortably treat patients with varying levels of acuity. At the beginning of the project, the department offered 54 patient spaces.

The new, inviting reception area features natural light and expanded space with access to televisions, WiFi, and a separate children’s area. It also includes a new Patient Assistance Center to help direct patients to community resources and support groups that can assist them once they leave the hospital. In addition, hospital police are be stationed in the reception area at all hours for a secure environment.
